CITY THEATRE TO PRESENT WORLD PREMIERE OF RAPP'S WITHOUT YOU

City Theatre announced a surprise special engagement, Without You, written and performed by Anthony Rapp. Directed by Steven Maler and featuring a rocking four-piece band, Without You will run on City Theatre’s 272-seat Mainstage from August 28 thru September 21, 2008.

In 1994 Anthony Rapp was working at a Manhattan Starbucks and about to audition for a new rock opera by a young guy named Jonathan Larson. This is where Without You begins. In his new one-man show, Anthony shares his audition for Rent, getting cast, rehearsals, and his view from the stage during the tribute performance on the night after Jonathan’s tragic death. Without You also details Anthony’s achingly beautiful relationship with his mother during this turbulent time. Featuring Anthony’s own lyrics and melodies, stories adapted from his memoir, and the landmark songs of Rent, Without You is a valentine to the groundbreaking musical and celebrates all of our seasons of love.

The Music Director/Guitarist for Without You is David Matos, and musicians include Daniel Tomko (Bass) and A.T. Vish (Drums). The design team consists of Tony Ferrieri (Scenic), Angela M. Vesco (Costumes), Andrew David Ostrowski (Lighting), and Dave Bjornson (Sound). Patti Kelly is the Production Stage Manager.

Without You is adapted from Anthony Rapp’s book, Without You: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and the Musical Rent, published by Simon & Schuster. Anthony is best known for originating the role of Mark Cohen in Rent and performing it on Broadway and in the 2005 film adaptation. He is also well known to Pittsburgh audiences for his role in City Theatre’s production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

LUPONE, GAINES, AND BENANTI CELEBRATE 'GYPSY' RECORDING AT B&N

On Thursday August 28th at 5PM Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Triangle will host Tony and Olivier Award-winning Patti LuPone, four-time Tony Award-winner Boyd Gaines and Tony Award-winner Laura Benanti in a Q&A with theater journalist Patrick Pacheco (NY1, The Los Angeles Times), followed by a CD signing with additional members of the Gypsy cast and multiple Grammy nominated producer Robert Sher.

The event will be a celebration of the August 26th release of the Gypsy cast recording from Time Life.

This new and most complete GYPSY recording features never-before-recorded songs that were cut from the original Broadway production including "Three Wishes for Christmas," "Mama's Talkin' Soft," "Nice She Ain't," "Mother's Day," "Smile, Girls," "Who Needs Him?," and an alternate version of "Mother's Day." Additionally, award-winning Broadway and Hollywood orchestrator Jonathan Tunick created new orchestrations for the additional musical numbers.

GYPSY, the musical fable suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, is written by three legendary theatrical giants. The book is by two-time Tony Award winning legend Arthur Laurents, with music by two-time Tony Award winner Jule Styne and lyrics by multiple Tony Award winner Stephen Sondheim. The 1959 blockbuster, originally directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, boasts a legendary score with such classic songs as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Rose’s Turn” and “Some People.”

The smash hit new production of GYPSY opened to rave reviews. Ben Brantley of the New York Times exclaimed “Watch out New York! This GYPSY is a wallop-packing show of raw power!” while liz smith of the New York Post declared the show to be the “best production of the best damned musical ever!” and David Rooney of Variety said “Patti LuPone’s GYPSY is one for the history books.”

Tickets for GYPSY are $117.00 - $42.00 and are available through Telecharge at (212) 239-6200 or www.telecharge.com or by visiting the St. James Theatre box office. Premium seating is available. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., Wednesday and Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

      QUICK POLL
Neil Diamond recently refunded money to fans that saw him in concert on a night he was too sick to sing well. Would you feel entitled to a refund if you saw a Broadway star perform on a night he/she was obviously sick or vocally tired?
Yes, I’d rather see an understudy or be offered a refund or exchange than to see a star too ill to perform well.
No, that’s what happens in live theatre. Just bear with it and admire the star’s work ethic.
