Chief Conductor Charles Dutoit, Principal Flute Jeffrey Khaner, and The Philadelphia Orchestra give the US premiere of Vivaldi's Flute Concerto in D minor ("Il gran Mogol") on March 4, 5, and 8. The previously unknown score of this Vivaldi work was discovered in the National Archives of Scotland in 2010 by Andrew Woolley, research fellow at the University of Southampton. The program also includes the world premiere of Jonathan Leshnoff's Flute Concerto, written for Mr. Khaner, as well as Ravel's Rapsodie espagnole and Strauss's Ein Heldenleben.
The "Il gran Mogol" score, which is written in the hand of a copyist, is a lost part of series of four "national" concertos by Vivaldi. The others, titled "La Francia," "La Spagna," and "L'Inghilterro," remain lost. The manuscript score was among the family papers of the Marquesses of Lothian, a collection that was purchased by the National Archives of Scotland in 1991.Flute Concerto - World PremiereVivaldi Flute Concerto in D minor ("II gran Mogol")- US PremiereStrauss Ein HeldenlebenFree PreConcert Conversations led by Cynthia Folio, associate professor of music at Ether Boyer College of Music, will take place on March 4 in Verizon Hall and March 5 and 8 in the Rendell Room, 1 hour before the concert.
