Chief Conductor Charles Dutoit, Principal Flute Jeffrey Khaner, and The Philadelphia Orchestra give the US premiere of Vivaldi's Flute Concerto in D minor ("Il gran Mogol") on March 4, 5, and 8. The previously unknown score of this Vivaldi work was discovered in the National Archives of Scotland in 2010 by Andrew Woolley, research fellow at the University of Southampton. The program also includes the world premiere of Jonathan Leshnoff's Flute Concerto, written for Mr. Khaner, as well as Ravel's Rapsodie espagnole and Strauss's Ein Heldenleben.

The "Il gran Mogol" score, which is written in the hand of a copyist, is a lost part of series of four "national" concertos by Vivaldi. The others, titled "La Francia," "La Spagna," and "L'Inghilterro," remain lost. The manuscript score was among the family papers of the Marquesses of Lothian, a collection that was purchased by the National Archives of Scotland in 1991.

The Concerto was scored for flute, two violins, viola, and bass, but the part for the second violin part is missing. Mr. Woolley reconstructed the missing part by referring to another flute concerto in which Vivaldi seems to have reworked "Il gran Mogol." The work received its modern day world premiere by the early music group La Serenissima at Perth Concert Hall, in Perth, Scotland, on January 26, 2011.
